On Thursday, May 2, 2024, Adler Pollock & Sheehan P.C. , Citizens, and the United Way of Rhode Island hosted a Pro Bono Day, an event to provide legal assistance to local nonprofits, led by Geoffrey Millsom, Shareholder and Chair of the AP&S Banking and Finance Group and Walter Conroy , EVP and Deputy General Counsel of Citizens. Attorneys and legal professionals at AP&S and Citizens volunteered to spend the afternoon meeting one-on-one with #localnonprofits that were paired with us by the United Way and Citizens. Kathryn Windsor , Shareholder and Chair of the AP&S Tax Group, started the day with a presentation and training session for the volunteers to review questions and problems that may arise when reviewing the nonprofits bylaws. A big thank you to all the volunteers who were able to provide valuable information to these nonprofits that provide much needed services to Rhode Islanders.

But that’s not to say revocable trusts are without drawbacks. This article details how a revocable trust works and lists its pros and cons. A sidebar explains the differences between a revocable https://buff.ly/3wrzA3x

It was an honor to attend the launch event for the newly established Rhode Island Black Women Lawyers Association (RIBWLA). We were treated to insightful words of wisdom from Judge Thompson, Judge Long and Judge DuBose. I am looking forward to the wonderful work RIBWLA will do!

There may be circumstances when a person must make relatively minor changes to his or her will. Does the will need to be completely rewritten? Not usually. For these “quick fixes” an attorney can draft and execute a codicil. This brief article discusses when (and when not) to use a codicil. https://buff.ly/4cZX4NA

If charitable giving is high on one’s objectives list for his or her estate plan, one option to consider is using a donor-advised fund (DAF). Indeed, DAFs have been steadily growing in popularity in recent years. What’s the main attraction? Among other things, a DAF can give a person greater control over his or her charitable endeavors than direct donations. This article explains the ins and outs of a DAF. https://buff.ly/4aDSimR
